Claude.ai is excellent for one-off questions. It breaks down for iterative work. Every conversation starts fresh. Documents get respawned instead of edited. Memory is opaque and conflated across contexts. There's no clean way to work on the same project — or fitness plan, or dating strategy, or finances — over weeks and months with an assistant that maintains canonical state.
The primitive that makes Claude Code powerful isn't coding. It's agent + filesystem + bash. Apply that primitive to a workspace of prose docs instead of source files, and you get a tool that catches up to how power users actually think and work across multiple domains of their life.
What Midlight is
A directory on disk, synced across devices, that you and an AI work on together. Inside it: regular files, mostly markdown, organized however you want. The AI operates on them the way Claude Code operates on a repo — reading, editing in place, running bash, calling tools, spawning sub-agents.
- Files are files. No proprietary container formats.
- Memory is files. Visible, inspectable, scoped.
- Every change is a commit. Restore Tuesday's draft.
- Multi-model. Claude for the primary, GPT for critique.
Who it's for
Power users — people who already use Claude and Claude Code seriously enough to feel the seams. Designers, developers, AI-fluent creatives. Not mainstream. Mainstream catches up later, the way it did with Figma, Linear, and Obsidian, or it doesn't, and that's also fine.
The build path
We're shipping invite-only, BYOK only. You bring your Anthropic and OpenAI keys; we don't take a cut of inference. Hosted plans come later, once we know what people actually use. Open signup ships together with paid plans when invite-only usage validates the product.
What it isn't
Not a chatbot. Not a notes app. Not a productivity tool with an AI sidebar. Not a coding tool. Not for mainstream non-technical users in v1. It's the workspace power users wish Claude.ai was — files-first, persistent, scriptable, cross-device, transparent.
